A New Model of the Universe? A New Camera?

A new model of the Universe? A new camera? iPhone news from artist Craig Boehman.

Two big revelations today—one cosmic, one personal. Scientists are shaking up our understanding of the Universe’s expansion, suggesting it doesn’t happen evenly. Turns out, areas with more mass might experience slower time. Mind-bending, right? Just when you think the Universe is 13.8 billion years old, new data drops and changes the game.

Now, my shift isn’t world-shaking, but it feels big to me. After years of being a DSLR-and-mirrorless purist, I’ve had to rethink things. Using the iPhone 16 Pro for street photography recently has been... eye-opening. The results? Close to what you’d expect from “real” cameras. It’s made me question some long-held biases.

That said, smartphones still drive me nuts. Handling them for photography is awkward at best, and no gadget fixes that without defeating the point of portability. But performance-wise? It’s creeping up on compact cameras—and might already surpass them. I’ve been experimenting with different shooting modes (details on my blog later), and the creative possibilities are real.

Bottom line? Like those new Universe models, my “photographic universe” is expanding. Smartphones might not replace my main gear anytime soon, but they’re showing me new ways to approach fine art and street photography I wouldn’t have considered even a month ago.

More thoughts soon. Stay curious.
