The Memorial Photo Walk

Firoze Shakir wasn’t just a friend—he was my guide during my early days of exploring Mumbai. One of the first places he introduced me to was his home in Bandra Bazaar. Over the years, our photo walks together could be as spontaneous as they were planned, depending on the day. We roamed many parts of the city, some of which I might never have discovered without him. Yet, most of our walks revolved around Ranwar and the greater Bandra area, where we focused on photographing people—a shared passion.

Firoze’s images, like mine, were always about people. He was a people photographer in the truest sense. Living in Bandra since the '90s, he knew countless individuals, and just as many knew him. What set him apart was his connection to the downtrodden—the beggars, lepers, and street dwellers. He knew their names, their stories, and their struggles in ways few ever could.

As we walk in his memory, we may encounter the very souls he connected with so deeply. Firoze had a gift for engaging with everyone he met, and it’s this spirit of connection that we honor on this photo walk.

About the Walk

Calling all who knew Firoze Shakir or admired his passion for street photography—join us in honoring his memory with one of his favorite activities. This memorial photo walk will begin at Bandra Talao, weaving through the lanes of Ranwar, a place close to Firoze’s heart. From there, we’ll head to Chimbai Village, where Firoze introduced me to several fishermen years ago. With luck, we might meet some of them again.

The walk continues along Carter Road’s promenade, concluding at a cafe for coffee, chai, and refreshments. For those who wish to keep going, I’ll be continuing to Danda Village, exploring its bustling markets and residential lanes, before crossing the bridge to Juhu Beach. There, I’ll wrap up the day with a final photography session before heading home.

This is more than a walk—it’s a tribute to a man who saw beauty in the streets and the people who live there. Let’s honor his legacy together.

What To Bring

Bring comfortable walking shoes and any kind of camera you prefer. I’ll be using my phone for this walk, a nod to Firoze’s favorite tool in his later years. If you’re new to street photography or want tips along the way, I’d be happy to help—I’ve led photo walks for clients worldwide and love sharing what I know.

This walk is free and open to all. It’s not about costs or competition—it’s about Firoze, the people, and the shared joy of photography. Let’s capture the streets the way he did, with curiosity and connection.
