Sony ZV-1 Street Photography Hack: Fastest Way to Power On and Shoot
Often, the smallest details can significantly impact one’s photography. In my case, one such detail involves transforming a vlogging camera into a street photography tool. Although I don't vlog or make videos with the Sony ZV-1, I've overlooked a small but crucial adjustment that has enhanced the camera's readiness for street photography. Surprisingly, it all comes down to the screen.
There Are Two Ways to Power On the Sony ZV-1
Method #1
Of course, the normal way to turn on this camera is to press the power button on top.
The power button isn’t immediately obvious because it’s overshadowed by the prominent red video record button. However, once you become familiar with the layout of the top panel, locating the power button becomes easy. Turning the camera on and off becomes second nature, allowing you to operate it without any issues.
Method #2
The second method is less intuitive, especially if you're not accustomed to using your camera for video, as is the case with me. It involves the screen on the back. Instead of using the power button, you can simply open the fully articulated screen to turn the camera on and close it to turn it off. I discovered this when I first got the camera and was experimenting with it, but it never occurred to me that this could be a useful hack.
The second part of this hack involves how you position the LCD screen. Normally, I would keep the LCD screen fully visible like this:
If I open the LCD screen by pulling it out to the left, it enters selfie mode, showing nothing on the back of the screen. Instead, when you're ready to power off, flip the LCD screen in the opposite direction so it isn't visible. This not only gives the camera the appearance of an old film camera but also helps protect the LCD screen from damage if you don't have a screen protector.
Here’s How to Easily Power On the Sony ZV-1 for Street Photography
Just like using the power button, turning the Sony ZV-1 on and off with the LCD screen will automatically return you to the last focal length used. This method allows for quick activation, making it ideal for fast-paced street photography. Additionally, it offers the flexibility of using the LCD screen for low-angle shots or discreet shooting without alerting your subject that they are being focused on.
