About Entering the Mycelium

Entering the Mycelium is a visual exploration that intertwines traditional photography, Intentional Camera Movement (ICM), and artificial intelligence to delve into the profound connection between humanity and the ancient use of psychedelic substances in religious rituals.

Throughout history, various cultures have incorporated psychoactive substances into their spiritual practices. In ancient Greece, the Eleusinian Mysteries are believed to have involved a beverage called kykeon, possibly infused with ergot, a fungus containing LSD-like compounds, to induce visionary experiences. Similarly, Mesoamerican civilizations, such as the Maya, utilized psilocybin mushrooms in their ceremonies, as evidenced by mushroom motifs found in their art and artifacts. Recent archaeological findings have also uncovered that ancient Egyptians consumed hallucinogenic concoctions during rituals, as demonstrated by the analysis of a 2,000-year-old vessel containing a mixture of psychedelics, alcohol, and other ingredients.

In this piece, I employ ICM to capture the dynamic essence of natural forms, creating a blurred, abstract foundation. By integrating AI, I manipulate these initial images, targeting and reshaping existing pixels to construct new, immersive worlds that echo the altered states of consciousness sought in these ancient rites. The resulting composition invites viewers to traverse the boundaries between reality and the visionary experiences that have been central to human spirituality for millennia.

Entering the Mycelium serves as a homage to the enduring relationship between humans and the mystical properties of the natural world, reflecting on how these ancient practices continue to influence contemporary perspectives on consciousness and art.
