Juhu Beach ICM
Photography Workshop

A different way of seeing the shoreline. Explore movement, light, and abstraction through Intentional Camera Movement.

Group $250 Per person

The experience

Photography doesn't always have to be about freezing a moment in time. Sometimes, it's about doing the exact opposite.

This workshop introduces you to Intentional Camera Movement (ICM), a technique that uses deliberate camera movement and slower shutter speeds to transform familiar scenes into abstract, painterly images.

Along Juhu Beach, we'll work with the shifting light, colors, figures, and textures of the shoreline. Whether you're new to ICM or looking to refine your approach, the emphasis is on making deliberate creative choices while leaving room for unexpected results.

Sessions currently run from 3 PM to 6 PM. Dates are arranged on request and confirmed before payment.

Private sessions: $300, paid in full in advance to secure your date. We'll work at your pace and concentrate on the techniques that interest you most.

Group sessions: $250 per person, paid in advance to confirm your place. Working with others offers a chance to exchange ideas and compare different interpretations of the same scene.

A signed terms and conditions form is required at payment. Workshops are non-refundable; trip cancellation insurance is recommended.

What you'll learn

Exposure and camera settings

Use shutter speed, aperture, and ISO to shape the amount and character of motion blur.

Movement techniques

Experiment with horizontal, vertical, diagonal, and other deliberate camera movements.

Framing and composition

Identify shapes, contrast, color, and visual relationships that work well in abstraction.

Focal length

Understand how different lenses change perspective, subject isolation, and the appearance of movement.

Creative control

Review results in the field, refine your approach, and find the balance between intention and chance.

This is a practical workshop: shoot, review, adjust, and shoot again.

Camera equipment

A DSLR or mirrorless camera with manual exposure controls is required. Smartphones are not suitable for this workshop.

A zoom lens is recommended, ideally reaching 85mm or longer (full-frame equivalent). Longer focal lengths can help isolate subjects and simplify abstract compositions, though shorter lenses can work well too.

A fixed or variable ND filter is required, with enough light reduction to achieve shutter speeds of up to half a second even in bright afternoon sunlight. Make sure it fits the lens you intend to use.

Expensive or specialized equipment isn't necessary. Familiarity with basic camera controls is helpful, and we'll cover the relevant settings together.

Preparing for the beach

Expect serious heat and humidity

We'll be outside for up to three hours, often with limited shade. Bring a hat, sunscreen, and plenty of drinking water. If you're sensitive to heat, please consider the conditions before booking.

Water and shoreline

Wet sand, splashes, and getting your feet or lower legs wet are possible. Entering the water is optional and always subject to tide and surf conditions. Keep your camera protected from saltwater and sand.

Clothing and footwear

Wear lightweight clothing, shorts or water-resistant trousers, and secure-grip sandals or other footwear suitable for wet sand.

Travel light

Bring only the gear you need, ideally in a lightweight bag with appropriate protection against sand and moisture.

What's included

  • Optional pre-workshop Zoom call to discuss equipment, techniques, and expectations.
  • Up to three hours of guided ICM photography and hands-on instruction at Juhu Beach.
  • Individual feedback on camera settings, composition, movement, and creative decisions.
  • Optional post-workshop Zoom call for image review and post-processing guidance.

Beyond the photograph

ICM changes how you look at a scene. Rather than concentrating on sharpness or literal detail, you begin to notice rhythm, form, color, and the possibilities of movement.

Juhu Beach offers an ever-changing canvas for that exploration. The aim is to leave with more than a few interesting images: you'll have a practical approach you can continue developing long after the workshop.

If you're ready to experiment and see what happens when you stop trying to keep everything sharp, let's get out there and make some photographs.
