June 4th Photo Walk at Versova Beach

Versova Beach scene, by artist Craig Boehman.

There are flashier beaches in Mumbai but Versova Beach is my personal favorite for photography and for a walk. With a wide array of subjects, from local and Koli communities to horseback riders, vendors, and fellow visitors, it’s a beach continuous with activity. There are also the methi farmers in the southern portion of the beach and the current Coastal Highway construction that’s reshaping the beach and local environment for the foreseeable future.

I’ve been photographing Versova Beach for years, visiting during all times of the day and throughout the seasons, including monsoon. There are only a couple of weeks left before the rains kick in and I won’t be leading any photo walks in Mumbai during this time. So it was fun to get out with a few locals and a visitor from Hyderabad this past weekend to photograph a few of Versova’s residents.

For this outing, I packed both my cameras and made use of my phone a little bit too. But the photos I’m sharing here were taken on my Sony A7iii and Sony ZV-1 at 85mm and 24mm respectively.
